About Me
I'm a father, husband, teacher, and coach in a small midwest town. I love travel, the outdoors, camping, and sports. As a teacher, I mowed lawns and did odd jobs in the summer to stay busy between sports camps and kids' activities (& not blow money). Our family was "comfortably" living paycheck to paycheck, blindly saving money into various "investments", & hoping someday we'd have money for retirement (teacher pension right?). I had no formal financial education (until now), little understanding of account types, and zero investing strategy. One thing I had going for me, I was debt adverse (thanks mom) but we always had debt (huh?). Then COVID... debt nearly paid off, government checks coming in, and too much downtime for a brain like mine. So, I started researching what to do with this "extra" money and found the personal finance rabbit hole (blogs and newsletters to come). At this point, I've read and/or listened to dozens of books (I've got recommendations), consumed thousands of hours of podcasts and YouTube (ask my family), streamlined nearly all our investments, and used or created several finance tracking tools.
As a science teacher, I'm a bit of a nerd. Numbers, problem solving, spreadsheets, charts and graphs are kinda my thing. Plus I'm competitive (to a fault), everything is a game I need to win. I'm also obsessive (sorry, students, athletes, and family) when it comes to something I'm passionate about (coaching, science, vacation planning), I'm all in. Plus, I have a knack for planning and systemization (failure to plan, is planning to fail). After 18 years in the classroom, I'm making a change. I'm working towards my registered investment advisor (RIA) designation, but I still need to teach and coach. It's scary but I've got a plan to help other people understand personal finance. I believe in life-long learning. I'm always striving to get my highest return on investments and I want you to... too (English is dumb- Read the 1-min blog below).
